Developmental Editing

Developmental edits help the overall structure of your story. Whether you are writing a memoir or a high fantasy novel, getting a developmental edit will help you strengthen your writing.

Authors should get a developmental edit when they feel that their manuscript is somehow incomplete or disorganizedtoo long or too short. The edit will help to expand the story and make some necessary.

If the author is having trouble getting the book published, or if they are having trouble with particular areas of their work, they should consider getting a developmental edit to make improvements to the manuscript.

Organization of Manuscript

More often in nonfiction, the manuscript in question needs to have more structure: there sometimes need to be chapters included, removed, or reordered based on the writers need.

Regarding fiction, the plot and story will be evaluated and possibly rearranged in order to to best fit the plot laid out by the writer

Author Choice / Area of Improvements

Notes in the margin provide the writer with context on specific scenes or lines of text that may be conflicting with the author's preference or vision. It opens discussion between editor and author, and enables positive change or slight tweaking depending on the situation.

3

Evaluation Document

The findings of the evaluation will be provided in a developmental document, sometimes ranging upwards to twenty pages and including high-level notes on story, plot, structure, characters, setting, and other key areas of the book.

Coaching Session

Developmental editing rounds out with a call at the end to give the author good direction on next steps, whether to continue with a copy or line editing, or make substantial changes to their book prior to moving on in the editorial process. This call also allows a live exchange that can be productive in the author's mission to publish their book whether through traditional or self-publishing avenues.
